THIRTY-THREE

Then, the sound of a vessel began to intertwine with that of the drones’ weapons fire. Jace pointed up at the sky and Kyda was never happier to see the Yellow Byrd. Sophia waved to them from the cockpit, as she brought the vessel to their eye-level, and turned it around so that they were facing the hatch. The hatch door opened and Lydia stood nearby it. “You need to jump.”

Jace looked at Kyda. “This is the only way. Either we jump or we die at the hands of those drones.”

Kyda didn’t need a reason, as she took several steps back and ran to the edge of the cliff, leaping off into the air. She extended her hands, but made an error in the timing. She missed landing on the ramp leading to the hatch, but managed to grab hold of the edge of the ramp with her bare hands. Her legs continued to dangle off the ramp as Kyda tried to avoid looking down into the abyss.

Lydia panicked, as she edged forward. “Grab hold of my hands.”

Kyda tightened her hands around the edge of the ramp, as her eyes caught sight of the sheer drop below into a mountainous terrain.

“Grab my hand,” Lydia repeated.

Kyda tried to pull herself up, but she couldn’t. The Yellow Byrd began to sway to the left and the right. Kyda felt her hands beginning to lose their grip. She couldn’t hold on, but, at the last second, Lydia’s hands grabbed her. Kyda clutched hold of Lydia’s clothes, as she was pulled up the ramp and into the hatch. Kyda’s breathing was erratic and her heart was racing, as she closed her eyes.

“You really know how to be dramatic at the wrong time?” Jace smirked.

Kyda opened her eyes, in confusion. How the heck did Jace get into the vessel so quickly?

“It was only a small jump,” Jace said, as Lydia closed the hatch door. “Sophia, get us out of here.”

Kyda didn’t say a word, as she continued to catch her breath. She was irritated with herself for mistiming the jump and nearly getting killed. She was the daughter of Leroud and a lot was riding on her shoulders.

“You better rest a bit, while I help Sophia,” Jace said and sauntered off to the front of the vessel.

Germaine knelt down beside Kyda and offered her a drink. “This should help.”

Kyda smiled, weakly and took a sip of the liquid, which was refreshing. As her strength returned, she stood up and hugged both Lydia and Germaine.

“You were so brave,” Germaine said. “I wouldn’t have even tried to jump.”

Despite that, Jace had made the jump from the edge of the cliff to the vessel look so simple. Kyda was now more embarrassed with herself for making a mistake. She slowly made her way to the front of the vessel and sat down behind Sophia, after which Lydia and Germaine joined them.

“It is good to see you up and around,” Jace smirked.

Kyda rolled her eyes. She wasn’t going to ever live down her near death experience hanging off the ramp of the Yellow Byrd.
