The Clark Ranch
Once we obtained permission from the Clark family to camp and search their property, we decided who would be part of the expedition and when we would conduct it.
Four of us were able to go on this first trip, myself, Milo, Paul and Bob. We chose a weekend in February or March that year and would take the school bus to Paul’s house in Roy. Once we arrived at Paul’s home, we took our packs that we had brought with us and stored away any last minute items we decided we might want to have with us.
We had not brought a lot of things, a change of clothes, and food for a couple days. We brought along an old heavy canvas cabin tent that Paul had, it took two of us to carry it due to its weight and size. We worked in pairs to carry this and took turns as we hiked to the Clark ranch.
We had decided to walk along the railroad tracks that led out of town, and that also went right by the Clark’s home.
Once we arrived at the ranch, we decided a rest was in order after hauling that heavy tent a mile or so. We also wanted to check in with the Clark’s, and find out if anything new had been heard there.
They came out to talk with us, and said they heard the strange screams almost nightly, they said we were welcome to go anywhere we liked on their land but they would not go out there. They pointed in the direction the odd noises came from and we said our thanks and moved out in that direction.
We hiked across open fields to the nearest tree line, there we entered the forest and kept going in the direction they said the screams came from.
We were very ill prepared in the beginning of our searching, I was the only one of our group that had a camera but had not brought it with me. We had only one flashlight among the four of us, and didn’t really have any plan. We were mostly going to see if the stories had any substance, I am not sure what we thought we would accomplish if we did encounter a Sasquatch and in those early days we had not learned to plan for contingencies, but we went ahead anyway.
We hiked cross-country, having no trails to navigate by. Soon we came to a stand of cedar trees, there was a nice grassy area in the middle of this and it looked like a good place to make camp.
We were in close proximity to the Nisqually River, and thought this as good a place as any to set up our base of operations, we thought if anything were out here that this would be the best area to look.
We set up the tent near the edge of the open area, and gathered some large rocks to make a fire ring. We gathered a pile of dry wood
