CHAPTER FOURTEEN

In her robe, wet hair still dripping down her back, Linda raced around the kitchen, making orange juice, cutting bananas for the cereal, heating up some cinnamon rolls. There was no time for a normal Sunday morning breakfast. Finding no cereal dishes in the cupboard, she opened up the dish washer. No one had remembered to turn it on the day before. She rescued enough dishes for breakfast, scrubbed off the 24 hour old corn flakes encrusted on their sides, and placed them on the table. Taking a large pan from under the stove, Linda filled it with dog kibble and hot water. Damn! She had forgotten to get the meat part out of the freezer. She ran to the garage for a loaf, placed it in the microwave to thaw, poured the milk and orange juice. “You guys had better hurry if we are going to leave here in ten minutes like Dad wants!” she yelled, hoping her voice would reach to the corners of the house.

She was stirring the dog meat loaf into the kibble when Ray came downstairs to the kitchen. He was almost dressed. A Grand Knight, he would be one of the honor guard at the Sports Arena in the closing ceremony of the Archdiocesan Convocation this morning. His outfit, which dated back to the Middle Ages, was impressive: black tuxedo trousers, pointed shoes, flowing black and red robe and cape, a large pointed hat, even a saber.

Linda eyes lit up when she saw him, remembering how honored he had been when his beloved Knights of Columbus had elevated him, at an unheard of young age, to their highest degree. That was shortly after a Polish Pope had been elected. Ray was so proud he talked about changing their name back to Bonczek, like his family had been called before his grandfather had shortened it when the entire family had become citizens. Mark, just learning to spell, had talked him out of it.

“There are two buttons missing on my jacket… . and a spot on the shirt.” His voice was sharp, accusing. “You knew what I had to wear today.”

“No one can see the shirt with your cape on. I’ll sew the buttons back on as soon as I give the dog his food.”

“That figures!” His voice scornfully registering his hurt that even the dog was more important than he.

He pulled out a chair and sat down at the table as Linda took his jacket and looked through the catch-all drawer in the kitchen for some black thread and a needle.

“Not much of a Sunday breakfast,” he grumbled as he poured his own cereal into the waiting bowl. “Your mother couldn’t even make us eggs.”

As Linda felt herself start to respond in anger, she glanced at the clock in the kitchen. There was not time. She shrugged her shoulders in defeat and went upstairs to dress.
