Jack sat up abruptly and looked around. When he realized Tara had wakened him, he rubbed a hand over his eyes. “Feeling better?”

No answer.

He dropped his hand into his lap and looked up. Annoyance flashed in green eyes along with pain. He was in trouble. Again. “What?”

“How could you tell him?” Her tone brimmed with betrayal.

“Um, what are you talking about?” Jack cast Greg a confused glance.

“What…?” Her eyes widened in horror. “How many stories did you tell him?” Her voice raised a full octave. She winced, sending a red flag through Jack’s brain.

He looked to Greg for assistance. The other man grinned, clearly enjoying the opportunity to watch him squirm.

“Just… a couple.” He kept his tone level, hoping to defuse her anger by remaining calm. Getting so worked up wouldn’t help her head.

“Oh, so, what? You two are best buddies now or something?” Tears filled her eyes.

Jack sobered completely. The migraine was still bad enough to affect her emotions, make them more brittle than normal. He got to his feet and put his hands on her shoulders.

Greg closed in, concern etched on his face.

“It’s okay, Tara. I thought you wanted us to get along.” He raised a hand to cup her cheek. “Greg and I have… reached an understanding, you might say. Everything will be fine from now on. No more fighting. No more arguing. We both care about you, and that’s our common ground. I thought you’d be happy.”

She pulled away, rubbing a hand over one eye, the movement revealing the location of the pain resurging in her head.

Jack frowned.

“I’m sorry, Tara. That joke got out of hand.” Greg put an arm around her shoulders and gave her a light squeeze, kissing the top of her head. “I didn’t mean to upset you. I was just teasing.”

She glanced up as though evaluating whether Greg was telling the truth. He smiled.

“Sit her down.” Jack headed for the bedroom after a glance at his watch. He returned quickly with a box in hand.

Greg pushed Tara gently onto the couch.

She submitted to Jack’s ministrations as he removed the old pain medication patch from her neck and replaced it with another.

“I don’t like that stuff,” she protested weakly.

“I know, but you need it right now. Are you nauseous again?”

She shook her head.

Jack sighed lightly in relief. “That’s good. Do you want to try to eat something before you go back to bed?”

She couldn’t seem to make sense of his words, just sat there frowning.

Jack didn’t wait for an answer. “Greg, bring her some broth. We’ll get that into her and put her back to bed.”

When Greg shoved a cup in her hand a few minutes later, she didn’t protest. She followed Jack’s direction to drink. That fact made his heart ache. He stayed with her and made sure she drank every drop. Then he helped her back to bed. She quickly fell asleep. He returned to the living room.

“Is she always like that with these things?”

“What do you mean?” Jack thought it an odd question.
