Institutionalization in the Pauline Churches: the work of Margaret MacDonald

The widest study of institutionalization in the early church so far is that undertaken by Margaret MacDonald. She derives much from the studies we have reviewed but extends the discussion much further. She shows acute awareness of the difficulties involved in historical reconstruction in general and of the relationship between ideas, social context and sociological institutions in particular, and proposes ‘a cautious union’ between history and social sciences.58 The advantage of employing sociological tools is that they will provide us with a more complete understanding of the process of transformation that the early church underwent.
