During the Nine Days Before the Lecture on “Psychic Phenomena” (Apr. 28, 1931) …

In Virginia Beach: During these nine days, Edgar Cayce gave sixteen readings, most of them physical readings. Eight of these were given on the same day, including physical readings for Cayce’s father, L.B. Cayce, and for his son, Hugh Lynn.

About the lecture on “Psychic Phenomena”: This lecture is not one of the Sunday afternoon lectures, but is one of Cayce’s only other public lectures on record in 1931, so is included in this series. It took place on a Tuesday evening at the Monticello Hotel in Norfolk, Virginia. At the end of another “buried treasure” reading, the following exchange took place:

Question: Please suggest the general line of approach to the subject of “Psychic Phenomena” which should be made by Edgar Cayce in his talk before the Norfolk meeting tonight. Answer: That should be made as the spirit or the form gives itself expression in the actual activity of the hour, for if the individual has so lived, so conducted self in the way, the promise remains “In the selfsame hour will it be given thee what shall be said.”

Early in the lecture, Cayce refers to three cases of apparent psychic phenomena known at the time: Madame Paledena, Mrs. Piper, and the “case of Marjorie.” Madame “Paledena” is Eusapia Paladino, an Italian medium who had been under observation for many years. Mrs. Leonora Symonds Piper was a Spiritualist medium who was born in 1859 and died in 1950. Renowned psychologist William James said of Mrs. Piper: “To upset the conclusion that all crows are black, there is no need to seek demonstration that no crows are black; it is sufficient to produce one white crow; a single one is sufficient.” She became to him the “one white crow”—the one honest Spiritualist medium whose existence proved that not all Spiritualist mediums were dishonest.
