Mode of consultation

Two particular aspects of communication are discussed here: structure and power. Furnham (1997) provided a description of basic communication structures, which vary in terms of the speed and accuracy of the information conveyed and the satisfaction of the participants. Structures in which communication is controlled centrally or hierarchically (i.e. a hub at the centre of a wheel or at the branch of a Y shape) convey information quickly and accurately but are low on participants’ satisfaction (see Figure 9.1). A circle arrangement where participants are adjacent gains greater satisfaction but is poor on speed and accuracy of the information conveyed. The optimal arrangement is complete connectivity although this configuration may have no designated leadership and whilst more satisfying to participants, may impede decision-making.

Centralised structures of communication are preferable for relatively straightforward and simple tasks, such as conveying information, whereas connected networks are better for more complex interactions and are experienced as more democratic.
