Nevin, Lake, and Rin have made their way back to the first floor of the generator tower in the operational Imperial Twins and are walking around, taking in what the ruins of the lost Imperial Twins once looked like.

Nevin watches Lake as she sizes up the ceramic-bricked firebox containing the transformer. She then looks up at the roof. “Is the roof ceramic lined too?”

Rin nods. “Correct. With UHTC tiles … ultra-high temperature ceramic tiles. All the roofs in each of the generator tower’s levels are lined that way.”

“To protect against fire?”

“Correct. To protect the roof and floor above.”

“I notice the top half of the walls are lined too,” Lake adds.

“They’re only half-lined to save on weight,” Rin says.

“You said the fireboxes are designed to take the heat and duration of a transformer fire,” Lake says, “but what about the temperature of the exhaust gases? Can flames make it out of the firebox’s louvers? If so, it’s likely the source of heat for the hydrogen deflagration.”

Rin shakes his head, looking adamant. “No. The louvers have a labyrinth design that suppresses the flames, and the smoke’s temperature is under the hydrogen’s autoignition temperature.” Rin then points to the louvers in the walls of the generator tower. “They’re the same type of louver.”

“Is that to stop flames from entering the HIC ducting and detonating?” Lake asks.

“That’s right,” Rin says.

“It still doesn’t explain why the HIC didn’t do its job,” Nevin says.

Lake spots several large stainless-steel pipes on the forward wall. “Is that header the hydrogen supply pipeline?”

“Correct.”

“Can we get the salvage team to look for them?” Lake asks. “I wouldn’t mind seeing them.”

“No problem, I’ll get them onto it.”

Nevin is once again impressed with how independent and focused Lake is. She could easily fill my shoes, and I’m sure she’d relish the opportunity to step up and lead the team.
