Fei sat at her desk going through the paperwork that a marine training platoon generated and once again thanked the gods that it wasnât her real job. She couldnât imagine how Grace had lived with this for so many years.
It wasnât difficult work, but it kept her at her desk far longer than she preferred, going through data to formulate the reports she needed to send up the battalion every single day. Sheâd known that Grace had spent a lot of time in her office but hadnât imagined that thereâd been so much data manipulation. It was far better to be the senior NCO of a platoon than to be an officer.
Even so, the last three weeks had shown her what she needed to do, and sheâd fallen into a routine. She saved the drudgery for the afternoon while reserving the morning for going through all the data she and Riggio were collecting, looking for anything that might stand out.
Not that sheâd found anything. Things had been far too quiet, and she was getting worried.
She was just wrapping up a series of reports covering the last week when there was a knock at her door.
âCome in,â she said briskly as she cleared the display above her desk.
When the door opened, it didnât reveal one of the drill instructors or someone from battalion. Instead, Earl Still Water stood in the hallway.
âI hope Iâm not disturbing you,â he said with an urbane smile.
âNot at all,â she said as she stood. âCome in and close the door behind you.â
He stepped into the office, closed the door behind him, and locked it. He then looked around at the utterly bare room.
âI love what youâve done with the place. It absolutely screams minimalism. Donât you think you should at least have something on the walls and shelves?â
She ignored his attempt at humor and gestured toward the chair in front of her desk. âIâd offer you something to drink, but as you can see, I donât have anything in stock. When did you get to New Dallas?â
The noble sat and grimaced. The seats werenât designed to encourage people to linger, so she wasnât surprised. That suited her fine, as she rarely wanted to meet in her office anyway.
âIâve been here a few days, but I didnât think it needful to contact you until Iâd nailed down a few things. I can now confirm that Countess Dayton did arrive on the same ship that brought you and Andrea here.
âShe didnât come down to the surface via the usual cutters but had a private charter pick her up in orbit. It took her to a private spaceport that my people have now identified, and I have confirmation of her arrival via their surveillance feeds.
âIâd have come on an earlier flight, but until a short time ago, I wasnât confident that sheâd taken the liner, and I needed to make sure before I committed. That woman is far more resourceful than Iâd have given her credit for.
âSince sheâs here, Iâm actually surprised that nothing has happened yet.
