Planet Abstone, Jarosite City, Dock BTD42

Tc’aarlat’s mind was lost deep within a labyrinth of worries as he and his crewmates crossed the expansive dock to where a figure in a smart business suit was waiting to greet them.

Which was why he didn’t realize he’d inadvertently stepped directly in front of Solobot 9000.

“Hey!” exclaimed the android, pressing her plastic palm against the Yollin’s thigh and attempting to push the interloper off to one side. “I’m walking’ here! I’m walkin’ here!”

Tc’aarlat scowled down at the droid. “What the fuck is that little shit-biscuit talking about now?”

“It’s a long story,” replied Jack. “As is, I imagine, the reason you’re disguised as the statue of Admiral Nelson in London’s Trafalgar Square.”

Adina spat out a laugh, quickly attempting to change it to a cough.

Tc’aarlat’s eyes narrowed. “What?”

“You know,” explained Jack, gesturing to the Yollin’s shoulder pads. “The whole covered with birds thing…”

“Don’t you start,” said Tc’aarlat with a sigh. “I had enough trouble getting out of my cabin without the lot of them. I planned just to bring Mist along, as usual, but she wouldn’t let me leave without the chicks tagging along, too.”

“She wouldn’t let you leave?” questioned Adina.

“You don’t know her when she gets an idea in her head,” Tc’aarlat said, throwing a hard stare up at the stern expression of the raal hawk to his right. “She can be very insistent when she wants to be. Fucking birds.”

“Feed the birds,” sang Solobot unexpectedly, “tuppence a bag…”

Tc’aarlat shook his head in frustration. “That thing is two sandwiches short of a dick pic!”

Adina blinked. “I think you mean picnic,” she offered.

Tc’aarlat glanced at her. “You take dick pics to a picnic?” he asked. “I’ll never understand you humans.”

“You don’t have to understand us,” responded Jack. “Just try to act like us for once.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Let’s just try to get through an entire mission without you putting your massive, crusty foot in it.”

“How dare you?” hissed Tc’aarlat. “I’m the consummate emissary, as you well know!”

This time, Adina didn’t attempt to conceal her laughter.

The conversation ended as the group reached their host. She was a short figure, reaching only as high as Jack’s waist—and the two rather obvious members of the security team further back appeared to be even shorter.

“Captain Jack Marber, representing the Etheric Federation,” announced Jack, holding out his hand. “Thank you for meeting us so late in the day.”

Finty Cole studied the proffered palm.

“I am aware of your species’ custom of shaking hands as a greeting,” she said with a workmanlike smile. “However, as I’m currently suffering from the effects of a seasonal virus, I shall decline your kind offer in case you find yourselves to be vulnerable to our illnesses.”

“Oh,” said Jack, slowly withdrawing his arm. “Thank you, I guess.”

Finty Cole bowed slightly by way of reply.

“We’re extremely sorry for your planet’s loss,” said Adina.

“Indeed,” agreed Jack. “Queen Bethany Anne would like to convey her condolences at this harrowing time.”

Another small bow, then Finty Cole turned her attention to Tc’aarlat.

“So,” he said self-assuredly.
