Chapter 14

Upon arriving at the temple of Mizutchi, Don sighed. His money was gone, he had no way to buy new weapons or armor, and his only remaining quest was nearly impossible. All of his hopes rested on the shoulders of Elder Okada, as he hoped she would give him a class.

As he entered the nearly vacant temple, he spotted the elderly woman speaking with an aged Mist-Elf man in drab, ocean blue robes. On his back was an intricately carved staff. At his side was a small group of Turta children, all dressed in the same fashion as the calm-looking Monk.

Quietly, Don approached the small crowd of people, trying to listen in on their conversation. As he did, Okada lifted her hand and called out to him.

“Don. I’m glad you decided to join us. You’re late.” Her words came out serious and biting, “Jingushi Hibiki’s time is invaluable.” Without turning her head, she summoned Don to her side, “Come, come.”

Without hesitating, Don picked up his pace. With each step, the conversation grew more clear. The two were talking about what was causing the Razormaw to relocate from the Deepwater Trenches to the sea-caves outside Eikotoshi. Okada seemed worried that they would eventually kill off the native wildlife and take up nesting in the region. If this happened, the city’s food supply and trade routes with other underwater settlements would be cut off. Hibiki, who was the head priest of the temple, was equally worried.

Remembering the swarm of small monsters tearing the younger beast apart, Don spoke up, “Uh. Sorry to interrupt…” Don whispered, bowing his head as the two turned to face him, “But, I think they are already nesting. While helping to return Shinyu I ran into a swarm of about a hundred smaller Razormaw. There was a cave filled with eggs and the corpses of those glowing fish.”

At Don’s words, Okadas head drooped, her gentle but firm demeanor growing cold and determined. A moment later, her eyes bored into Don’s, “Is this true boy? Do not tell lies. If this is true, then the threat is much more dire than we originally thought.” In reply Don simply nodded. To this, she whispered, “I see.”

For a long moment the temple grew silent. Patiently, the children stood at Hibiki's side still as stone, not wanting to interrupt the adults.

Eventually, it was the priest that spoke.“What are we to do about this Elder? There are but a few of us at the temple, and the town guards have their own troubles. With the influx of Adventurers has come crime. Those who are not criminals tend to only help when we can offer rewards. Unfortunately, the council does not have the resources to fund every would-be savior.” As his words ended, Hibiki’s gaze landed on Don.

Wanting to defend himself, Don began to speak before being shut down by Okada, “We cannot rely on adventurers alone, but we also must not turn away their help. This boy here has done a great deed for us all by rescuing Shinyu.
