Two Types of Fiber

Not all fiber is the same—and the differences can get more complicated than we need to get into here—but let’s look at the two main types:

Soluble fiber dissolves in water and turns into a gel-like substance during digestion, which helps slow down the process. Black beans, broccoli, apples, avocado, and sweet potatoes are all great sources for this kind of fiber.

Insoluble fiber is fiber that does not break down in the digestive system, but works as an aid to help move food through our stomach and intestines. It’s like a Hoover for your digestive system. Cauliflower, green beans, whole-wheat flour and bran, and nuts are all good forms of insoluble fiber.
