CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

T&T: Meeting New People

Fauna perks her ears. “Hark. I hear the footsteps of another traveler upon our path. Perhaps this is the adventure of which the Riders spoke.”

An Elf woman strides into sight. She carries a Sword and wears Leather Armor. “Hail,” she calls as the pair of travelers comes within hearing range. “I am Emma the Mystical. Who be you, and what brings you this way?”

“I be Ronnie, a Rogue, and my companion is Fauna, a one-quarter goat, three-quarters human lady. We have come this way looking for adventure. Do you know of any?”

“I just fought some Goblins off the road back there.” Emma points with her thumb over her shoulder. “Nasty creatures. They are probably more adventure than you’re looking for. I’d stay away from them. For adventurers, you lack weapons. What’s that you’re carrying?”

Fauna pushes out her chest, where she’s carrying her lot of fungi. “They’re Mushrooms. We plan to feed them to any monsters we meet and try to parley. We’re not the type to carry weapons. They did us little good, so we traded them to Riders for information.”

“Would you like some Mushrooms?” Ronnie points his chin at the white caps resting against his chest. “They’re quite good.”

“I’ll take them all.” Emma shakes out a bag large enough to contain everything the pair is carrying. She holds it under Ronnie’s arms. “Go ahead. Dump them in. If it helps, consider me a monster that needs feeding.”

“No problem.” Ronnie lets the Mushrooms drop into the open bag. He nods at Fauna. “Go ahead. Give them to Emma. We can get more.”

The goat-lady does as directed.

Emma closes the bag with a twisting motion and ties the end into a knot. “Thank you very much, gentleman and goat-lady. I will be on my way, as I look for adventure in a different direction than you. Pay heed to stay away from the Goblins. Farewell.” She resumes her journey.

Ronnie huffs and calls after Emma. “I thought you would join us in our adventures.”

Emma says nothing as she continues walking away.

“Come on.” Fauna takes Ronnie’s hand and leads him off the path. “We need to find more Mushrooms for the next monster.”

But Ronnie is distracted. “Why didn’t she join us?”

“Don’t fret about it.” Fauna finds some Mushrooms. “Come on. Load up.”

It takes them longer to collect armfuls of Mushrooms than before, but soon they’re back on the road, walking towards adventure.

Fauna stops. “Listen. Is that someone crying?” The two walk a little further. “It is someone crying, in the woods to our left. Shall we investigate? It might be an adventure.”

Ronnie nods. “Either someone truly needs help or they are pretending to, but in either case, an adventure could be had. Be prepared for deception, but be nice no matter what.”

Moments later, they spy a barefoot, green-skinned, green-haired young woman, dressed in dirty, ragged top and loincloth, sitting on a fallen log. She sobs, her head in her hands. She jumps up as the two adventure-seekers approach. “I don’t want any trouble.
