Chapter Nineteen

Jerin was sure he’d suffered a concussion from the blow to his head. Yet, after two days on his back, he defied the Healer, and his wife, by getting up and moving around. He had to take things slow. The dizziness practically knocked him off his feet at times. Carah was his constant companion, not that he minded. He only wished that Issah had fixed his head during his visit, instead of leaving him to mend on his own.

“You take this time to rest, Jerin,” Issah had ordered the day he’d stopped in to visit before leaving for Aloblase. “Everybody needs times to collect themselves and regain their strength. When you constantly run on full steam, you’ll soon burn out and begin to make grave errors. I’m sure General Marcel’s training taught you this?”

“Yes sir, but—”

Issah held up his hand. “No. I said rest. Everything is being taken care of. You are not the only one here who can accomplish things.” He’d rested his palm on Jerin’s forehead, causing him to go into a deep slumber which lasted nearly twelve hours.

When he awakened, Katrina filled him in on the Wilderland battle. She held her Ledge-o-graph to her chest as she sat beside his bed in the chambers he shared with Carah. If he had to rest, he wanted to be in his own room on a cushioned bed that didn’t dig into his back as the cot had.

“What?” His eyes narrowed on Katrina in suspicion.

Carah moved about the room, listening to their discussion which she’d already heard during the council meeting, a knowing smile on her face.

Katrina seemed hesitant to tell him her news, which set his nerves on edge. She cleared her throat, then stammered, “Well, it’s.... But first off, you should know Tarek’s father was killed in the battle. Alyra wrote that he’s been quite brokenhearted about that.”

“Wasn’t it his father who kidnapped the kid?” Jerin shifted his pillows so he could sit up better. His head swam for a moment, but it quickly passed.

Katrina nodded, but Carah spoke up, “Still his father, Jere.”

Jerin fought the urge to give a derisive snort. The lad’s family didn’t seem like a nice lot. But still, he supposed a period of grieving was understandable. “There’s more. I can tell by the way you’re biting your lip, Kat. Spill it.” He didn’t mean for his voice to come out in a growl, but he suspected he was about to get news he wouldn’t like.

“Well, the good news is he and Alyra are definitely bringing the Curians back home.” She smiled, but still, her brows pinched in what he’d dubbed her worry line. “Her brother is accompanying her. I’m still waiting to see if Ethan and Lotari will be able to gather the support of the creatures to come help us.”

“Will Lotari and Stitch come?” he asked, eager to see his centaur friends again. Lot and that rascal Stitch would actually be great assets. And if the Illuminate, Tarek, fought as well, they’d be more likely to clear the filth from Denovo in no time.
