Growing up in a city in India, studying in a convent school, coming from a middle class family, life was tough and yet filled with fun memories. Our needs were basic and so were our dreams. We lived within our means and were conditioned to do so. Having said that, it was good to be the norm and to be a “good” norm. Being brave was deemed foolish, being inspired was called wishful, being ambitious was termed selfish, being curious and questioning was seen as disobedience. Those were the conditions of society in the 70s and 80s. That was the mold I came from.

My life went on and I worked to please and to ensure my reputation was not tarnished. This was not a conscious effort as much as an unconscious wiring. I did the right thing, I said the right things and I behaved the right way. I was a good daughter, the family pride, a great student and a nice friend to have. I had extracurricular abilities in dancing, singing, debating and leading large groups. To the onlooker, this was a perfect portrait picture.

Thankfully, very early on in life, I was wired to be competitive and had a need to excel. These were, I thought at that point, good qualities to have, because to society and my community, it meant I was what we called a “rank” student, something to be proud of. However, it also meant that I was cut in the mold of being a goody-two-shoes; somebody who always did the “right” thing.

Growing up, life was filled with hardships and limited financial means. Witnessing that ongoing struggle up close, I acquired qualities of tenacity and resilience, both of which would take me far in life and help me make a success of myself. I went on to finish my post graduate diploma in Business and seemed ready to take on life.

I coasted into life with a will to do well and rise above my lot, and with skill sets I believed would help me get there. I got myself a glamourous sales job and quickly realised that it was not for me because of the long hours, skewed value system and, most importantly, the fact that it kept me away from the things and people that I loved. I dabbled in a few other roles, still finding my thing. These years were filled with a rush of newfound financial independence, novel experiences and new friendships.

I married early and, at 27 and a half, had my son. Life seemed like a whirlwind with one milestone arriving after another. It was exciting, so much change, so dynamic.
