Chapter 20

We Give Thanks

The only thing stranger than the night in the fighting pits was that the Brownings seemed as if nothing had ever happened. They were their same overtly mysterious group the week after the fights as they had been before, and if the girls had not witnessed the event with their own eyes, they never would have believed that Joshua had recently spent a few moments as a punching bag. The girls half wondered if they had imagined the entire event, but given that they each remembered it vividly, that proved unlikely.

Still, they couldn’t shake the fact that the Brownings were not only intentionally enigmatic, they were also the type of people who had no trouble maintaining clandestine double lives. That was a fact that troubled the friends most of all and one they carried all the way to the week of Thanksgiving. As the day neared, the friends grew more concerned about the two men they would introduce to their families. They were polite and charming without question. Their parents would all love Joshua and Win, but who exactly the mysterious men were was a question the girls still hadn’t answered after months of searching.

Their classes on Monday before the holiday were all effortless. Being that they did not have classes Wednesday and Friday that week their professors had them discuss some reading prompts of various historical events to pass the day but still have them learn something. The friends were surprised to get an email just before lunch that stated History through War had been canceled for the day. It was the third time Edmonton had canceled class since the week both he and the Brownings were out of town, the week of the first murder.

The peculiar timing of both his and the Brownings comings and goings had not escaped the friends. They hadn’t placed it yet, but they knew there was more to all the scheduling oddities. From visits with the Brownings being cut short or not happening because they were out of town to crunched classes to make up for the ones Edmonton had canceled, everything about the friends’ schedules had seemed to shift in a manner that forced their time to rush by, only to find themselves suddenly alone with nothing to do but wonder.

That week, though, the friends were not upset by the fact class had been canceled. It was still strange, as had been the times before, but they were so anxious and excited about the break that they pushed it from their minds. They took Monday afternoon and all day Tuesday as an opportunity to pack and relax in preparation for their trip home. Even without Joshua and Win, it was already guaranteed to be an interesting trip. It was the longest they had been home since moving to Little Rock, and they weren’t sure what almost a week back in South Arkansas would even entail. Much to the friends’ confusion, though, the start of that week also had been devoid of the Brownings.
