CLASSIC ’Q. Wafting through the Farmers Market, the soulful smoke of DeLong’s Bar-B-Q Pit drew hungry shoppers willing to throw vegetables aside for some tangy ribs. Cooking on a huge old-fashioned grill, DeLong’s delivered barbecued chicken, trout sandwiches, and other meaty treats through the wee hours. Lots of sauce and lots of napkins were used. And there was great sweet potato pie. DeLong’s was founded by Robert and Adeline Thompson in 1964, shortly after they relocated from Mississippi, and it quickly became the place for authentic barbecue! It was also one of Ann Arbor’s most successful African American–owned restaurants with a popular run exceeding 37 years—briefly and ironically, it became a vegetarian Indian restaurant before finally closing its doors in 2002. Over the years, Ann Arbor has proven to be a fertile environment for African American startup restaurant businesses, and while DeLong’s is the most notable, many still fondly remember Johnnie’s Diner on Huron Street, run by John Eddins. It later became the Rose Bowl, owned by peace activist Rose Martin. And many still recall Ike’s Snack Shack on Catherine Street, owned by Ike and Racine Hunter.
