CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Nathan and Magdalena Corey were married in Beaumont, Texas in the summer of 1992. Intent on staying in the town they both were raised, the couple rented a small home in a quiet neighborhood in East Beaumont.
With his background in chemistry, Nathan found it easy to gain employment with Commerce Pharmaceuticals, the area’s largest employer. Magdalena went to work as an instructor at a local dance studio, and the couple began saving money to purchase their own home.
Three years later, still living in the small rental house on Spruce Street, the couple were quickly becoming frustrated with the fact that everything they wanted in life seemed so out of reach. Before long, the marriage began to suffer. Nathan began to blame Magdalena for their inability to find a home. Her expectations were too high, he said. Champagne taste and beer money, he would shout, throwing up his hands in frustration. If she would only settle for less, they could afford a modest home. Magdalena, on the other hand, was fond of pointing out to Nathan his own shortcomings. He had a degree in chemistry, she would tell him. He should already have risen to the upper echelons of Commerce Pharmaceuticals. He didn’t have the backbone necessary to assert himself to push for an elevated position in the company.
They had known each other all their lives, kissing for the first time while still in kindergarten. The second kiss was longer and meaningful, at the Sadie Hawkins Day dance while in the sixth grade. The only separation they had known was their college years, when Nathan traveled to the University of Texas at Austin and Magdalena chose to attend the Texas School of Fine Arts in Dallas.
Nathan Corey loved his wife and had loved her since childhood. Magdalena thought she loved Nathan as well, but marriage was proving to be something altogether different from what the ambitious young chemist had promised. She tried pushing him to fulfill the dreams he spoke of since childhood, dreams he said he knew he could accomplish as long as Magdalena traveled the long road with him. He was elegant and eloquent, charismatic and popular. She had no reason not to believe him.
She was leaving him; dumping him because the money wasn’t available to purchase the home she thought they deserved. Nathan couldn’t concentrate at work, thinking Magdalena would leave while he was away. He willed himself to approach his manager about the possibility of advancement.
Nothing available at the moment, he was told. But I have the qualifications. Nothing, not yet, be patient.
Nathan walked back to his small portion of the extensive laboratory complex and pounded the top of his desk in anger. Fuck these people, he thought.
He developed his plan slowly, building on an idea that came from nowhere. A get-rich-quick scheme, an in-and-out proposition that would generate an indecent amount of money in a very short time. Illegal and risky, Nathan loved the thought of it. He couldn’t wait to see the look on Magdalena’s face when he came home with the first bundle of cash.
