Xina’s face crumpled as she waited. Campbell skimmed to the bequests and found it as Xina had said. Katherine left everything to a Janice Sandler. There were no charitable gifts or small bequests for Xina, the housekeeper, or anyone else.

“I don’t get it,” Campbell said.

“What?” Bill asked.

Campbell leaned toward the phone. “Ms. Tyler is leaving everything to someone named Janice Sandler.”

“Spell it,” Bill said.

As Campbell spelled out both names, Xina’s lower lip quivered and her eyes filled with tears.

“We’ll figure this out.” Campbell gave her shoulder a pat.

“I’ll do some quick online research and see what comes up,” Bill said. “I’ll call you back.”

“Thanks, Dad.” Campbell disconnected the call and turned to Xina. “Don’t get upset. Dad will find out what’s going on. If nothing else, you can call this attorney in the morning and ask if he’ll speak to you. Mr. McGann sounds like a reasonable man. I’m sure he could advise you on your standing as far as the estate goes.”

Xina’s lips skewed. “It’s not so much the estate—this house, and any money she might have. But she’s disowning me. I always thought she loved me.”

“I’m sure she does.” Even as she spoke the words, Campbell had doubts.

“I shouldn’t be here in her house,” Xina said. “Should I go to a hotel?”

“Oh, I don’t think you need to rush into that.” Not for the first time, Campbell wished her dad had a bigger house and they could invite her to stay with them. “Nobody else knows what’s in the will. At least, I don’t think so.”

“What about that Janice woman?”

“Well, she might. But she probably doesn’t know you’re here. If it comes up, just tell her you’re Katherine’s next of kin, and you’re looking out for her health.”

“What about the people who witnessed the will?”

Campbell studied the last page of the document. “I don’t recognize the names. Do you?”

Xina shook her head.

“It could be people who work in the lawyer’s office,” Campbell said. “Let’s just relax and see what Dad finds out.”

Running a hand through her hair, Xina said, “I’m not sure I can ever relax again.”

Campbell stood. “Let’s go freshen our tea. Come on into the kitchen.” Even a change that small might distract Xina.

She put Xina’s mug in the microwave with fresh water and tea bag, to speed the process. As they waited, her thoughts churned.

“What am I going to do?” Xina wailed.

“Do you have any idea about your aunt’s net worth?” Campbell asked.

Xina’s eyes snapped to hers. “I—no. We found the deed to the house. It’s a fairly large lot and the house is in good repair, so it must be worth quite a bit. She had a few thousand in her bank account.”

The microwave’s timer dinged, and Campbell took the mug out and put in the second one and then carried Xina’s tea to the table.

“Here. Would you like something to go with it?”

“No, thanks,” Xina said. “We didn’t find anything like a mortgage. If she didn’t own the house outright, we’d have found something, right?”

“Right.
