BOYFRIEND

I was in my first session of chemotherapy during my second round when I realized I had a Facebook message from Laura Miller.

“Alyssa, I noticed that you ignored my first friend request. I was hoping we could be friends. I’m a good friend of your mother’s. XO Laura.”

I stared at the message, stunned.

Her profile picture was a furry black cat. I hate when people use their animals as their profile picture. She must be butt ugly. Does she love cats that much? What the hell?

I read the message six or seven times, and then handed the tablet to Landon for him to read.

“Nice cat, Kitten,” he said wryly, handing the tablet back to me. How does he always know what I’m thinking? “Are you going to respond?”

“I don’t know,” I said thoughtfully. I hadn’t been able to get her off my mind since the last friend request. At least now I had somewhat of an idea of who she was. “Nona said to stay away from her.”

“What about your dad?” Landon was sitting in a chair next to me rubbing my feet. I kept telling him he didn’t have to come to chemo with me, but he said it was our “quality time” and came along anyway, which I secretly loved. “Did you ask him?”

“When I asked him, he looked like I just killed his mother, so I changed the subject.” Both Nona and Dad were tight lipped about Laura, and that made me even more curious, but I was in no shape to play detective.

I put the tablet down and tried to lie back as far as the recliner would go. I put earphones in and listened to the sound of the ocean. I visualized myself swirling in the waves, gently bobbing back and forth. I was exhausted and my head hurt. I couldn’t bring myself to think about Laura Miller anymore.

I fell asleep and when I woke up, it was time to go.

Landon was unusually quiet as he walked me to his truck.

“Are you okay?” I asked, feeling a little paranoid.

“I’m fine,” he said, not looking at me. “Don’t worry.”

“What? Did I do something?” I asked, feeling a little paranoid. Normally, I wouldn’t have cared so much, but I was growing hypersensitive, and everything anyone said lately freaked me out.

We walked slowly to his truck, and he took me home, neither of us saying much. I couldn’t imagine what had happened between the time I went to sleep and the time I woke up that would make him so quiet. In all of the time I knew him, he was never this quiet.

We got to Nona’s and I started to get out of the truck.

“Lys, I know who Laura Miller is.”

“What? How?” My head was spinning. How could he possibly know?

“I Facebook messaged her and told her I was your boyfriend. I told her I wanted to know what was going on. I don’t want you to be mad, but I wanted to protect you if I could.” Landon looked like a little boy who was caught doing something terribly wrong.
