I turned off the 3D holographic projector, shutting down the display of one of the blueprints Kayog had included in my “dowry.” On top of the medical equipment, weapons blueprints, and materials, the Temern had included the blueprints of various technological tools and machinery that would significantly improve our quality of life without undermining the colony’s determination to put meaningful human interactions before technological innovation.

Since their use would likely be more controversial, I had kept them aside so he could present them to our people for a vote. As was his wont, my father remained mostly quiet while I described the purpose of each device. I hated that a vote or discussion was even needed. All of this should simply be made available to anyone who wanted it, and those who didn’t could simply ignore it. I realized then that the events of the past few days had truly eroded my patience and tolerance for the backward way of life imposed on us.

My father was opening his mouth to share his thoughts when the town alarm resounded, nearly making me jump out of my skin. Dad stood, a determined look on his face.

Pride filled my heart. My father was badass. Tall, broad-shouldered, with a ruggedly handsome face, he never backed away from a challenge. I’d inherited my curly hair and dark brown eyes from him, but had my mother’s more delicate frame. He was muscular, but not in the sharply defined way my husband and the other Zelconians were. Dad also didn’t have to raise his voice for people to shut up and pay attention. Usually, a single hard stare from him sufficed to make anyone squirm. But if he did raise his voice, you had better have your last will and testament written out and your house in order, because hell was about to break loose.

We marched out of the house to find a terrified crowd assembled on the square. At least a hundred Zelconians stood on the roofs of buildings close to the protective wall. As expected, Vyrax’s “army” was coming directly towards the square. No other units flanked us, testifying to the arrogant certainty the Yurus leader held that this would be a cakewalk.

I glanced overhead. The shimmer of the protective dome reassured me. Although convinced there would be no missile attacks, Dakas had not wanted to take any chances. I believed he also meant to put on a show to make Vyrax think twice about taking us on. And even if he still did attack—which he more than likely would—he would spend time preparing, which would give us more time to get our shit together.

I hated not having Dakas by my side, but he was with Graith, coordinating the Zelconians. While they wanted Vyrax to see them and be aware of the alliance between our people, they weren’t planning on interfering. The humans of Kastan were sovereign, and that needed to be properly conveyed.

I stopped in the square, just ahead of the rest of the crowd, while my father advanced alone.
