“My family doesn’t care where they eat.

They’re chill.”

How can one person be so wrong? When selecting a place to meet your in-laws, find common ground. Embody Switzerland. Sure, the Swiss can be annoying—boasting about Roger Federer, the superiority of their chocolate, and the brilliant writings of Hermann Hesse—but they do have bragging rights for their international political neutrality.

Unfortunately for you, 80 percent of the time your in-laws will insist that you meet on their turf, and over a meal. So, Ms. Manners, are you paying attention? Try to be the nicest dinner guest they ever had, even if you have to spit fishbones into your napkin and kick the dog to stop him from licking your feet under the table. You will be rewarded with homemade pie and whispers of “My, what good table manners Lauren has. I asked for salt and she passed the pepper, too. That girl was raised right!”

Some in-law families won’t welcome you into their home until after they’ve checked you out on neutral ground. Not just any girl gets to sit on those plastic-covered sofas in their parlor! In this case, don’t let your in-laws convince you to meet at Hard Rock Cafe, California Pizza Kitchen, or Red Lobster. Loud, packed theme restaurants are places for screaming families and bloated tourists, not first introductions to the fam—no matter how good the Caesar salad is. This isn’t a round of golf with Tiger Woods—you don’t want to start with a handicap.

How to move your meeting to neutral territory?
