I would encourage you to use this as a checklist to ensure meaningful collaborative next steps that help you navigate sensed bias successfully and achieve your objective.

We will elaborate on strategies for creating collaborative next steps in future chapters.

Chapter 10 Summary of Key Points

In this chapter, we learned the following:

• There is a proven formula for navigating all forms of person-to-person unconscious bias that you believe falls into the Peeve (directional bias) category.

• The IDU? Methodology is all about your personal perception of a situation and equipping you with the tools to navigate it based on your terms—collaboratively.

• There are four basic steps and one substep to navigating career-stifling, complex directional bias:

1. Set your mindset: Leave the baggage in the lobby.

2. Give unconscious perpetrators the benefit of doubt.

(a) Substep: But call out the perceived bias anyway.

3. Use DDE, focusing on the issue at hand and not the problem of bias.

4. Develop collaborative next steps.

• In the third step, DDE is the heart of the system and isn’t influenced by strong emotion. Therefore, the questions are nonaccusatory, rational, and impartial. DDE never calls out the actual problem of bias; instead it calls out the issue at hand from a place of learning and development. This allows for victims’ propensity for misinterpretation, otherwise known as reverse bias.
