A One-Man Support Group

Bill: Supporting each other was essential at every point of baby making, even in the beginning but especially when we did IVF. So it was hard for us to figure out who to tell and how much to say, and when. There’s also a certain level of privacy that an expecting couple wants to maintain until they know that if the woman does get pregnant, that her baby’s healthy until that second trimester starts. Many couples average about a three-month wait before they share news with friends and family.

Giuliana: Early on, we had a decision to make when we were trying to have a baby in quiet: We could either lie about this part of our lives and not film it, or we could do what we said we were always going to do with Giuliana & Bill, which is let people know what our life is like with the hope that they might learn something from our journey.

Bill: Honestly, we didn’t know if we could keep doing the show without talking about fertility, because it’s been what so much of our relationship’s been about for the last two years. We felt that if we didn’t discuss this part, it wasn’t a true “reality” show, and we would either have to pull the plug on the next season or film a bunch of lies. We opted to talk about our journey.

Giuliana: It was interesting to see how many people really cared about the process, especially when we announced that we tried IVF. I’d be on an airplane, and the flight attendant would ask, “Would you like something to drink? And did the IVF work?” It was a little weird to let strangers into something that’s allowed to be private for so many couples but not for us. Then again, that’s what we signed up for, so I just smiled graciously and told everyone, “Hopefully you’ll hear some good news soon!”
