Final Thoughts
You don’t have to jump out of a plane or cliff dive to get a life-affirming adrenaline rush. Still, you have to take some risks that challenge you physically or mentally. Think about something you’ve always wanted to do but never pushed yourself to follow through. Did you always want to get into a race car, go ocean kayaking, run your first 5k, or learn to surf or skateboard?
When we’re stuck, we often play it safe; maybe too safe. Every day we put on seat belts, we lock our doors, we don’t talk to strangers. These are all good things to do. But mentally, every once in a while, we need to “hang it all out there,” attempt an exhilarating feat, really live our dreams.
It’s easy to make excuses: “can’t,” “too old,” “will fail,” “will look stupid.” We all have weaknesses and disabilities. If you have a bad back, you should not get on a mechanical bull. Still, we don’t push the limits of what is possible. You may think you are protecting yourself by staying safely at home, but in fact the real fountain of youth is in the “doing,” in the places where the unexpected happens, and in a life where you say “I dare me.”
TIPS FOR FINDING “I DARE ME” FIRSTS
What would you do if you could summon the courage? If it’s a challenge that seems insurmountable, break it down into steps. Want to go scuba diving? First sign up for a class at your local Y. Take small steps to give you confidence and training to get to your big moment.
Expand your friendships. There are clubs for everything. If you want to learn to rock climb or hike or ski, join a club that encourages and supports that adrenaline rush dream you have.
Make chores a game. Put a stopwatch on the mundane cleaning or shopping. Race your kids or your friends and get your heart pumping with the competition.
Follow the leader. Let the kids in your life pick the adrenaline rush adventure (within reason). Sometimes watching them jump off the high dive can be the inspiration for us to take a brave jump too!
