THE LAGOM APPROACH TO TOYS
We all strive to make our children happy, not only providing essentials, like food, a loving home and clothes, but also ensuring they have everything they need in terms of games, toys and books. But where do we draw the line?
Our grandparents owned a small selection of toys – a bear, for example, that was highly valued and still cherished to this day. Today, our children’s bedrooms are stacked with toys. But do mountains of beeping, flashing, walking and talking toys really make our little munchkins happier? I was fascinated but not surprised to learn that, according to experts, too many toys – or ones that aren’t age appropriate – can actually do more harm than good.
British research showed that when children have a large number of toys they become distracted which hinders learning and play.8 Having fewer toys gives them the chance to use their imagination and helps them treasure what they have. So the next time our little ones nag us for that plastic toy at the checkout, we can feel safe in the knowledge that we’re saying no for their sake – and not because we know it will be painful to step on in the middle of the night!
So which toys should we invest in? As with all things lagom, it’s about finding balance. Yes, every child needs a toy and other tools to help them play, but they also need our time, time to play with friends and time to be alone.
