Two hours later, he was back at ATN. Dingo was gone, and Peter and Sarah were working on songs together. He popped in and sat, listening to Peterâs song about somebody getting beaten. He didnât really understand why that was an important event that a third-grade cartoon watcher would need to know. Then he listened to Sarahâs song about how weâd all be doing base-eight math if we had four fingers on each hand, which was comprehensible to Levon, who understood the mathematical principles very clearly, but not exactly riveting grade school material. He couldnât imagine what a third-grader would make of that.
Still, he smiled and told them both that their songs were good, which wasnât exactly a lie, since they were both catchy, even if the lyrics were not exactly there.
Finally, Levon was too jealous of Peter and Sarah to stay in the room. They had found each other, and their relationship seemed easy and uncomplicated. They were getting a little out there in terms of their lyrics, but they believed completely in what they were doing and took very seriously Pamelaâs instruction to think about their passions. Sarah even seemed to be taking Pamelaâs dietary nonsense seriously.
âYou know, Pamela told me some interesting things about bowel movements today,â she said, and Levon looked intently at her to see if she was messing with him. She wasnât. His eyes flashed to Peter, who was biting his lip trying not to laugh and who gave Levon a quick shake of the head to indicate that no, this wasnât a joke, and he shouldnât laugh about poop right now.
âYou know what, I think I feel a song coming on, so Iâm gonna have to ask you to hold thatââhis choice of words made him snort, and he was afraid heâd crack upââthought.â
He ran from the room and into his own, closing the door to soundproof his laughter. Once he was done laughing, though, he started to feel sad. He envied Sarahâs certainty. She was sure of everything, and Levon was sure of nothing.
He didnât want to sit in here thinkingâin fact, he didnât want to think at all. Fortunately, he had been made custodian of the toilet bong and Captain Sunshineâs fine scotch. He filled and fired up the toilet bong and thought about what kind of obscure thing he could write a song about. A few bong hits, and it came to him.
âPosition and momentum, you canât measure both/even with a perfect microscope,â he began to sing. He cracked himself up, so he kept at it until heâd actually completed a song about the obscure, incomprehensible-to-third-graders subject that suited his mood best. He called it âHeisenbergâs Uncertainty Principle.â
