Katie

Right when the words left her lips, the demon lunged forward with a surprised look on its face as it dropped the knife, the weapon clattering to the floor between it and Angelica. There had been a loud thumping noise from behind the demon, and Angelica realized that the young girl must have struck the monster on the back of the head. Angelica saw her opportunity, and in one swift move she picked up the knife and drove it upward, below the breast bone, into the creature’s heart.

The monster’s white eyes popped wide open in surprise as Angelica gazed into its face, the memory of her dead parents her only thought. The creature dropped to the floor dead, revealing the young girl, who stood behind it with her makeshift weapon, pointing to where the demon once stood.

The girl had a crazed look in her dark brown eyes, mixed with a tinge of fear. Her skin was as dark as the misty clouds during the day, and her hair as black as they were at night. She was breathing heavily, and it took Angelica a few seconds to realize she was breathing just as hard as the young girl.

“I’m Angelica.”

The girl tried to catch her breath and said in two mouthfuls, “I’m — Katie.”

“Katie, we need to leave. When they find the body, they’ll kill you. You have to come with me,” said Angelica, as she moved to the door to check if anyone was coming.

Not saying anything, but nodding her approval, Katie followed Angelica to the door. Angelica peered out and noticed the coast was clear. Both girls quickly ran out and headed toward the back of the village. There weren’t any demons close by, and the ones they could see were all focusing their attention on the slaves rather than looking outside the village.

In no time whatsoever, they had left the village behind them and were once again moving along the path toward Houston. Angelica had quickened her pace once they cleared the village, and Katie was doing her best to keep up, but she was getting tired.

“Can we slow down now? They can’t see us any more,” asked Katie in between deep breaths.

“No, they may find the body and notice you’re missing. Also, I was following my friend when I stopped to help you. I need to catch up to him.”

“What friend?” asked Katie.

“The man the demon army had bound as a prisoner when they stopped in your town earlier.”

Katie ground to a halt and responded, “Are you crazy? You’re trying to catch that army?”

Angelica stopped running, turned and walked back to Katie, grabbed her by the shoulders, and calmly said, “My friend has been sent from God to stop the demons once and for all. He needs my help. You can come with me and fight for the side of the Lord, or you can go back to the slave camp. It’s your decision.”

“I think you’re nuts, but there’s no way I’m going back to the camp,” replied Katie skeptically.
