Chapter 10

“This is both exciting and terrifying,” Ara said and hopped up and down in his seat. “I’ve never actually been to a Montelabras planet. We came close with one of our captains, but he was killed before we got there. Of course, he was actually trying to work for the corrupt bastards, but we’re going to take them down.”

“Don’t say that too loudly,” I chuckled.

The transmission had ended, but I still glanced at the weaponized freightliners like they would hear the A.I.’s comment and come back around, but they made just enough room for us to pass through. I only had a few feet on either side of our wingspan and their shields, and the hole that opened in the hot pink planetary barrier wasn’t any bigger. It was as if the guy in charge wanted us to crash, but as far as he knew we were there to help the company win back Alnora.

“The clouds are so thick that I can’t see through them,” Carina said as we passed through the first layer. “And there’s some kind of interference that’s making it impossible for me to scan the surface.”

“Could they have signal jammers in the clouds?” I asked.

The burnt-orange clouds swallowed us like a whale the second that we passed through the shield, and I took a deep breath to steady my nerves. I doubted that the guy would’ve let us through if they planned to kill us the second that we were in the atmosphere, but it wouldn’t be hard for one of the armored ships to sneak up on me. The deadly cotton candy buffeted against us as if we were in the middle of a storm, and I had to hold tight to the joystick so that we didn’t go off course.

“I don’t think they have signal jammers, Captain,” Carina answered in a breathless voice as if the ship was having as much trouble with the clouds as I was. “But I’m still having trouble reading anything. Those ships that we saw could be hiding anywhere.”

“My thoughts exactly,” I said and then jerked us to the right as a purple bolt of lightning flashed in front of our nose. “Damn. We need to get out of here. Can you tell me how much further it is?”

“I can’t,” the female A.I. said. “I’m sorry, Captain. I don’t know what this is.”

“I don’t like this,” Ara said and climbed onto the back of my chair as if he needed comfort. “What if this is an ambush?”

“If they wanted us dead, then one of those freightliners would have blown us up like they did with that pirate ship that we sailed through,” I said and pushed us forward.

Carina seemed to guess what I was up to and redirected most of the power from the weapons to the propulsion engines. The extra boost was exactly what we needed to free ourselves from the orange hell and the purple lightning that grew more frantic with every passing second. The female A.
