Chapter 11

“This really does fit well,” I said and twisted my torso around.

The S.R. tactical suit was in pretty good condition considering how long the scouts had been in the out out world, and Rosings had actually taken care of it enough that everything functioned. The diagnostics system ran a full body check as soon as I’d put the helmet on and informed me that four of my ribs were bruised, my ankle was severely sprained, and I was dehydrated. The robotic suit reminded me of something from a superhero movie, but without the cool rockets on the feet and hands to help me fly.

“You were lucky that Rosings was about your size,” Ara said from my shoulder. “I’m almost finished hacking into the system. It’s easier than I thought it would be. Of course, I don’t think that the Star Republic planned to let someone like me get this close to one of their soldiers. They probably thought that no one could defeat one of their crazed guard dogs.”

“Luckily, we all worked really well as a team,” I said and glanced at Narra. “And we have our own crazed friend.”

“It was one time,” the healer huffed from the hoverboard. “I just lost my cool.”

“I didn’t know that you had a cool side,” I teased. “You’ve been fairly aggressive since I met you. Not that you don’t have a reason to be.”

The jawa-like woman glared up with reflective silver eyes and then pulled her hood down further. It had been terrifying to see just what those long sharp nails could do when she was angry, and I was glad that Narra had chosen to be friends with me. The healer’s ability to kill was intense, and though the helmet of the tactical suit and the power pack had already been ripped off before she’d made her move, there was no doubt she would have found a way to shred that as well to reach her target.

“My father would be mortified,” she said.

“Why?” I asked. “Because you’re a woman? Or because you’re a healer?”

“Because if we fail to kill the other two, then it will come back on the rest of our people,” she said. “Our kind must always think of the many before the one. It’s the only reason my father didn’t avenge my brother. And why my great-uncle didn’t accompany that blade that he gave you. We are smaller and sensitive to sunlight where your kind are large and can endure the day in all its glory. We must be careful not to make powerful enemies.”

I strolled over to the edge of the butte and looked down below where Rosings body laid in a heap against the red and cream sandstone. The bully hadn’t made it easy to take him out, but that was all the more reason that I needed to be the one to do it, because Narra and her people never would’ve made it through the tactical suit, and the Uncompromising Ones were too passive to fight off three trained and brutal soldiers.
