Chapter Ten
Founderâs Day dawned clear and mild. Scott did the morning chores and loaded the wagon with the food Rena had prepared for the picnic. He leaned against the wheel and waited for her to come out of the house. He adjusted his hat lower on his brow, and the front door opened.
His breath caught in his throat when Rena stopped on the porch. She brushed the front of her skirt with one hand and stilled when she looked up at him. Her shoulders lifted in inquiry. This strong woman whoâd stood toe-to-toe with his prisoner was questioning her appearance.
He took off his hat and gave a swooping bow. âMaâam, would you do me the honor of accompanying me to the Founderâs Day festivities in Gran Colina?â
She giggled but didnât move from her spot. âWhy, kind sir, that is a generous offer, but I am not certain of your motivation. Do you wish to merely escort me into town and leave me to my own devices, or will you be enjoying the events of the day at my side?â Even in the shadow of the porch, he could see her blush. She was flirting with him.
He approached the steps. âMy intention would be to spend the day with you, but as pretty as you look, Iâm sure to have to guard you against others in pursuit of your company.â He winked and held out a hand to her.
âIâd be delighted to spend the day with you, Sheriff Braden.â She slid her hand into his and descended the steps.
Rena looked down at him after he helped her into the wagon. âThank you for making me laugh.â
âWeâre both due for some lighthearted fun. What do you say we make the most of today?â He went to the other side of the wagon and climbed aboard. Lifting the reins, he glanced sideways at her. âYou look lovely today.â
âThank you for saying so. And thank you for all my new clothes.â She adjusted her cape. âThis is the first outfit. Opal said the other outfits should be completed soon.â
âIâm happy that youâre pleased.â
Scott drove them into town then. They were early, but the streets were already busy. The festivities were soon to begin when they met up with Oscar.
âGood morning, Rena.â Her father kissed her on the cheek. âYouâre looking especially lovely today.â
âI have to agree with you.â Scott shook hands with his father-in-law. âI see they finished building the platform.â
Rena looked around at the growing crowd. âIâm so glad you were able to work out having a political rally next Saturday afternoon. Hopefully everyone can enjoy today.â
Her father nodded in agreement. âIâd like to take the two of you to supper at the hotel after the rally next week. I want to celebrate your birthday, Rena.â
Scott had no idea it would be her birthday.
âPapa, you donât have to do that. I donât need a celebration this year.â
âYou may be a grown and married woman now, but youâll always be my baby girl. You can count on me celebrating your birthday every year.
