Forever Somewhere
And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Luke 16:23
It was the end of an uneventful day, but it would prove to be an unusually eventful night. The evening air was coldâthe kind of cold where stepping outside leaves you unable to breathe and feeling like you were just beaten half to death by a polar bear.
I was returning from a Bible study with several of my friends. When we pulled into my driveway, I braced myself for the cold and took a deep breath that I hoped would last me until I got inside my house. Holding my breath, I jumped out, waving good-bye to my homies, and dashed for the door. I was about to open my door when all of a sudden it blasted forward, almost knocking me over. A strong, invisible force moved through my body pushing me backwards and causing me to exhale all the oxygen in my lungs. Someone or something was coming out of the door as I was trying to go in. It was dark, so I couldnât make out who it was. Then a strange fear swept across my body emanating from my gut to the ends of my fingers. I had not felt this kind of fear since I was a kid and had to sleep alone in my room after seeing the movie Nightmare on Elm Street. I cannot begin to describe how frightened I was.
A few seconds went by and I gathered my wits and went inside. As I closed the door I slowly looked around the room without moving any farther into the darkness. Reaching for the light switch, I felt fear attacking me like a thug holding me hostage, demanding that I not turn the light on. I weighed the issue and thought it would be better to have the light on than to stand there freaking out in the dark. So I braved the vast unknown, determined to kill anything that might be hiding in the darkness. I flipped the switch and a sense of ease comforted my emotions as I welcomed the dim illumination the small lamp provided.
I went into my room, sat on my bed, and puzzled about what I was experiencing. I thought back to the conversations Iâd had with my friends on the ride home. Were we talking about scary movies or childhood fears and now it was messing with my head? Flipping through the rewind feature in my mind, I dismissed that thought because we had spent almost all our time talking about feeding the poor and being Good Samaritans. With the shower scene from the movie Psycho playing in my head, I was feeling creeped out and decided to skip my evening shower. I pulled off my shoes and clothes and tried to snuggle under the covers.
As I lay there unable to sleep, I made another decision to keep my bedside lamp on. I kept rolling from one side to the other, glancing every now and then at the clock on the wall.
