Chapter 18

The irony fell heavily on their shoulders. Mariska looked at Yako, but his disbelieving eyes were fixed to the page. Massius had created the Hunters.

“Impossible,” Mariska whispered. “Never have I seen one who is so far removed from being a warrior. How could he create and train the first of our Order?”

Yako didn’t reply, but read on. Massius had beseeched the Council to allow him to form a group of specially trained vampiric warriors that would be instrumental in finally putting a stop to the attacks.

Then another thing happened, and as he read on, Yako’s hands balled into fists.

The Elder had not personally created and trained the Hunters. Instead, he had asked that the Council allow him to contact an associate of his. Jiro Shimamoto. The vampire warrior’s prowess was a thing of legend among every ninja clan in Japan, as well as among the human population. Since ninjas operated at night, and only those few who trained with them in their reclusive villages knew their identities, it was not looked at as unusual that he was only seen after the sun had set.

The assassin had never failed a mission and there had not been a politician or emperor alive whose blood did not turn to water at the mention of that name. Jiro Shimamoto had three pureblood children; his only son, Ichiro, and two daughters, Amaya and Hisako. Mariska’s eyes went from Yako’s calm face to his trembling fists. She read on.

The book did not go into much detail about Jiro or his family, but there was mention of Hisako bearing a child, Katashi Shimamoto. Katashi’s lineage reached all the way to present day, and his descendent had gone on to become the best Hunter on the North American continent.

Mariska’s eyes widened and she looked at Yako, whose features were a little too controlled. He continued reading, his eyes darting rapidly from left to right as he devoured the text. Jiro had come to Peles Castle at Massius’s behest, formed the clan that would become the Order of Hunters, and trained them. In a manner of one year, they had decimated an entire pack of werewolves and beaten back the other two. It was not until later, after Denry Ordine had been killed during a skirmish with the wolves, that an exception was made and Massius had been allowed to become a member of the Council.

Mariska watched the Eldest Hunter. The more he read, the more Yako’s rage became apparent. As with every craven who attained power, Massius had felt decidedly vulnerable and in need of better protection. He brought the proposition before the Council that there be the creation of one more clan, an elite clan that served only the members of the Council. After tirelessly pressing his point, Massius had finally convinced the Council, and he once again commissioned Jiro Shimamoto. This time, the legendary warrior was to train only the best Hunters of the coven with the best talents to become elite warriors and personal guardians.
