CHAPTER FIFTEEN
At the crack of dawn, Azure opened her eyes and sat up. The grass beneath her had acted as a fine bed, even if the trees hanging above had failed to keep the rain off her. As far as mornings went, it looked like today would be better than most. Only a pair of clouds in the sky and that promised a reprieve from the recent drizzly rain. Azure cracked her neck and climbed to her feet, picking up her spear to be safe.
Soren turned at the movement and nodded a greeting. She returned his nod and strolled past him. Given it was his turn to take last watch, she could rest easy leaving the camp for a bit. If it had been someone elseâ¦
Azure wandered over to the nearby creek and stepped past the trees that lined its length. With a soft groan, she crouched at its waters and splashed some on her face. An unapproachable scowl glared back up at her, but she was long used to her own reflection.
After taking a drink, Azure climbed to her feet and scanned her surroundings. They had travelled deep into the empire and had camped while remaining vigilant for any signs of mist. Yet despite Wyâs warning, they had spotted no mist walkers. Still, Azure couldnât calm down. The second she let down her guard, they would come. She knew it. Birdsong drifted to her ears, and Azure smiled. If birds were singing, that likely meant nothing dangerous was in the immediate area. Not that she would leave the othersâ safety to some birds.
Azure glanced up at the sky and grinned at its nearly flawless blue expanse. It beckoned to her, and she had the perfect excuse to answer the call. As the desire to fly burst to life in her chest, Azure glanced back towards the camp. The others were still asleep, and Riti and Gen would take some time yet to awaken. That thought, coupled with her excuse, gave her all she needed.
Azure Untethered and summoned her cloudy wings. A chill ran through her back and ankles as the condensation dampened her skin, but that did not matter when she felt the earth loosen its grip on her. With a wide grin, Azure leapt into the air and beat her wings. She soared higher into the sky, flying over the tops of the trees until she had a wide view of the area. Below her, the small patches of trees lining the creek wound south, and she burnt the image of the specific treetops into memory. As long as she remembered them, she could venture further out across the rolling hills and grassy plains without fear of losing the others.
Remember, Azure thought, you are supposed to scout for danger. This isnât just a joy flight. Still, the wind in my face is perfect.
After a few minutes of basking in her freedom, Azure returned her attention to the ground below. She soared to the north and frowned; could she even spot mist from this high up? Itâd prove helpful if she could, but she doubted so.
