Margie knocked at the Countryman’s front door early the next morning. She had so much that she wanted to tell Becky and she hoped she could convince her friend to go downtown shopping with her for some new riding clothes. When she’d tried on her old outfit the night before she had discovered it was a little on the snug side. She hadn’t been riding much in the last three years so she hadn’t bothered to replace it as she’d grown. Her mind was deep into deciding what style of outfit she should get this time when the door opened and there stood Gerry.

“Margie!”

“Gerry! When did you get back?”

“Yesterday. Come in, come in. How’ve you been?”

“Very well, thank you. And you?”

“Becky told me all about your successes in designing. She also told me you have about a hundred beaus.”

Margie laughed, feeling more than a little uncomfortable. “Oh, Becky. She’s exaggerated a bit I assure you.”

She followed him into the sitting room to wait for Becky.

“And one is a prince or something?” he continued, offering her a chair.

Margie grinned. “Not quite. He’ll be an earl someday. You know him.”

“Oh, yes. Greyson. Seemed like a nice fellow.”

“Yes, he is.”

“Notice the stars in her eyes,” Becky said from the doorway.

“Is that supposed to make me jealous, little sister?”

“Yep,” she grinned. “Are you?”

“A little,” Gerry admitted with a smile at Margie.

Margie wasn’t sure what to say to that and an uncomfortable silence followed. “When are you going back to school?” she finally thought to ask.

“Same as last year—the first week in September.”

Memories of last summer’s romance and September’s good-bye came rushing back into Margie’s mind and she looked away from him, afraid he would see her sudden discomfort.

“Hey,” Gerry said, looking as if he, too, were remembering. “How about you and I go out for dinner next week, say Tuesday? We’ve got a lot of catching up to do.”

“Yes,” Margie said. “I’d like that.”

“Good,” he smiled. “Well, I know you didn’t come to see me so I’ll leave you two to your girlish pursuits. It was nice to see you again, Margie,” he added. “I look forward to seeing you Tuesday.”

“Yes, me too,” Margie said, her smile returning.

“What’s up?” Becky asked when Gerry had gone.

“Do you want to go downtown today? I have to get some sort of riding outfit for this weekend.”

“The tally-ho party?”

“How did you know?”

“Some of the Northland Girls were talking about it. Why don’t you borrow one of my outfits? You could alter one of them to fit you perfectly, really show up that Gloria Butler.”

“I don’t even think she’ll be there,” Margie said.

“She’ll be there,” Becky said. “And she’ll look as pretty as can be, as usual. You’ll never find anything downtown at this late date. I’ll even let you take in my new habit to fit you.”

“Oh, Becky, not your new one. I couldn’t…”

“If it’ll help you irritate Gloria, it’s worth it. I’ve only worn it once. It’s very modern and smart looking, so it’ll be perfect. Oh, I forgot.
