BE HONEST WITH HER. Aris’s words replayed through Dathan’s mind with each anxious step he took along the corridor to Lyna’s room. The trip he’d made with Calum to visit Jaggan’s parents had taken longer than anticipated, increasing his frustration the more time he was away from Lyna. He should have listened to his sister, taken her advice, and immediately spoken with Lyna. Instead, he’d contacted Calum, more concerned about her health and that of his unborn child.

Calum might believe what happened in the past wasn’t Dathan’s fault, but it didn’t mean Jaggan’s parents had forgiven him. Even though the older couple seemed edgy and uncomfortable with his arrival, they’d welcomed him into their home.

Dathan was disappointed but not surprised his inquiry into Jaggan’s whereabouts hadn’t brought him any closer to finding him. The couple told them they rarely heard from their son and hadn’t seen him in years. Supposedly, Jaggan left without giving a destination not long after Dathan had joined the hunters. Dathan hadn’t wanted to upset them or give them cause to worry, so he’d refrained from telling them about Jaggan’s plot for revenge.

During the visit, Calum received a medical emergency transmission and needed to respond immediately. He would have lost valuable time if he’d taken Dathan to Aris’s home first. By the time Dathan returned, it was late and he hadn’t wanted to wake Lyna. Unable to sleep, he’d waited until the sun was barely visible and crept toward her room. She might still be in bed, but he refused to wait any longer to speak with her.

Dathan stood outside her closed door, wondering how angry she’d be and how best to deal with it. After a couple of deep inhales, he gave up on striving for calm. The anxiety building in his chest seemed to get worse, not better.

Once inside, he programmed the overhead lights to a low setting so she would be able to see him clearly yet prevent any irritation to her eyes when she opened them. To his dismay, the bed was empty and hadn’t been slept in. A quick check of the bathing room told him she wasn’t in there either. When he glanced in the corner and noticed her bag was missing, he lost his temper and released a low, feral growl.

Lyna was gone, and he didn’t have to verify the coding to know she’d figured out how to bypass the security on the door access. Dathan knew exactly who was responsible for teaching her how to do it. As much as he wanted to blame Nyssa, he couldn’t. The fault belonged entirely to him. He should have tried harder to speak with her, told her why he’d been such a sheraaat. He’d waited too long, and now she was out there alone, unprotected and without a weapon because he’d taken her repeater.

Lyna was an intelligent female. She’d lived on Tarron long enough to know that some of the uninhabited areas were home to dangerous predators. So why hadn’t she
