“FUCK, THOSE ARE MERCENARIES,” Dawson snarled. He’d noted the armed men wearing black who stood in the corridor outside the main entrance. Whether in space or on Earth, he hated the renegades who stole or killed for a profit. Currently, the intruders maintained positions that kept them out of the hunter’s firing range. It wouldn’t be long before they found a way to take him out and breach the main entrance.

Protecting Nyssa had been Dawson’s main concern when he pulled her out of the line of fire. He was impressed by the way she was handling the situation, remaining calm and quietly assessing her surroundings. Some women would already be shrieking or crying hysterically.

Now that he knew she was safe, at least for the moment, he glanced around, searching for Holten and Kyllan. Everyone had scattered when the shooting started, and all he could see was the destruction the chaos had caused. Some of the tables were turned on their sides; spilled containers, broken glass, and food littered the floor.

There was a man dressed in formal evening wear lying facedown on the ground. He wasn’t moving. From this distance, Dawson couldn’t tell if he’d been injured or killed from the weapon fire. There was no easy way to reach the adjoining room, not without drawing the attention of the intruders.

There had been two guards manning the entrance on the opposite side of the main room. Dawson knew that most of the team assigned to the dignitary detail were in the other room, including Ryos. How many of them were still alive, he had no idea.

It frustrated him that he couldn’t get a visual to determine if the intruders had already gained access. He hoped that since there were still men outside trying to get through this doorway, the other entry hadn’t been breached yet. He slipped his hand beneath his jacket and unhooked the small communication device from his belt. He activated the autotransmit for Kyllan without receiving a response. The bad feeling wrenching his gut made him believe things were about to change, and not in a good way.

“We have another problem.” Nyssa tipped her head toward the doorway, a nervous edge to her voice. “Can you see the male to the right?”

Dawson shifted his weight to get a better view, then blinked to make sure he was seeing correctly. A man had appeared in the empty space he’d been staring at several seconds ago. At least he thought it was a man. “What the hell is that thing?” His job had taken him to different planets, and he’d met and seen a wide variety of alien species, but he’d never seen a being that had scaly skin and reminded him of a lizard.

“That is a Chamagor, an assassin who can blend in with his surroundings.

His lizard assessment was right. “Like a chameleon?”

“If you mean the tiny Earth creature with four legs and that changes colors, then yes. If he gets inside the room...he will find his target, and we will not be able to stop him.
