Troy pulled himself up to sit, beginning to get his strength back. He had endured much worse injuries and pressed on during his time as a SEAL. He wasn’t about to tell Leo or anyone else where to find Julia and Jake. He would be the one to protect them. Leo didn’t deserve his distrust, but Troy knew Leo might still confide in the wrong people.

Leo stood up and moved toward him. “Take it easy. You don’t want to move too fast.”

“I’m starting to feel close to normal. I could use a bite to eat. Then we can go looking together.” He hated lying, but he didn’t see any other way.

Leo walked to the doorway. “I’ll see if I can get someone to bring you food. Then I’ll go and get an update on my officer. I would very much like to question him about what he did.” Leo stepped from the room. “I’ll be back in a little while. Get some rest.”

Troy nodded and waited a minute before getting up and checking to see that he was gone. “You can come out now.” He turned and nearly toppled over when Julia threw her arms around him. It wasn’t what he’d expected.

“I’m so sorry, Troy.” She stepped back and looked at him, inspecting every inch. “Are you really fine?”

“I really am. I can’t tell you how happy, and relieved, I am to see both of you. We have to go before he gets back. No way he’ll let me go off on my own after what happened. He probably feels responsible.” He looked over at Jake. “Did you get to see your mom?”

The boy nodded then wrapped his arms around Troy’s waist. “I’m glad you’re better.” Had he finally won Jake’s trust? He hoped so. Troy would do anything to protect this little boy and the beautiful woman who’d somehow pierced the thick armor he had built around his heart. How had she done that?

“Thanks, buddy. We should move. Leo will be back soon.” Troy realized Julia was wearing a white doctor’s coat and nearly laughed. She was resourceful. He pulled his clothes out of the plastic bag on the counter. Julia and Jake turned and kept watch. He dressed as he spoke. “There’s a wheelchair right outside the room. You can probably roll me out of here wearing that.” He pulled his hiking shoes on and sat on the edge of the bed to tie them. “Is the Jeep here? It sounds like my truck is trashed.”

Julia nodded as she stepped out and pulled the wheelchair in. Troy sat down and casually looked around as she rolled him by the busy nurses and doctors, and out the door, Jake beside them. Once outside, Troy got to his feet and followed them around the side of the building, past a loading dock, to a long dumpster. The Jeep was neatly tucked between a concrete wall and the side of the container. He had to admit, Julia had done well on her own.
