Twenty Four

We didn't make it by breakfast time.

Sydney security emailed receipt of the prisoner, as we were heading across Nexus. They had also forwarded the claim for bounty, and ship for adjudication.

A while later, Customs emailed me with a report of the freighter carrying drugs I'd notified them about. They were ecstatic, as they'd been trying to catch this crew in the act for a long time. Since they knew drugs were on board, they'd torn the ship apart looking for them. Not having found anything, they resorted to measuring the rooms, and comparing them with the ship's specs. The size of one cargo bay didn't match. They started tearing walls out, and found a hidden compartment filled with illegal drugs. Bounties would be following, and they were happy to inform me the ship, a medium freighter, had been adjudicated to me already. They'd flown it over to my Carrier.

I emailed Bob to repair any damage done to the freighter, give it an overhaul, and a medium level AI. Any cargo Customs had left behind should be transferred to the storage location on the Carrier, where Customs were putting all the stuff adjudicated to me. When ready for space, he should let me know. David was sent a request to arrange a crew. As I had no details of the ship, I told him to contact Bob to find out what sort of ship it was, and its normal crew complement.

With time to kill, I started investigating the doors I hadn't gone through when Bob first showed me the ship. I went everywhere, and checked everything, all over the ship.

I'd returned to my suite around dinner time. In the bedroom, the trunk was no-where to be seen. I checked the closet space, and my clothes were hanging, and folded away. In a drawer, I found my medal case with all three medals in it, and the three boxes alongside. In another drawer, I found an assortment of kitten toys I didn't remember ordering. On impulse, I went into the bathroom. An empty kitty litter tray sat in the corner.

In the kitchen I found a cat food bowl, and an empty dry food dispenser in one corner, and a full water dispenser in another.

I also found meal selections from the food pallet were easy to hand, as was water and beer. I selected a beef stroganoff with rice, a gunky junkie, and water, and settled down in the dining room with my next episode.

Several episodes later, I went to bed.

I was dreaming of bikini clad babes on a beach, when the danger alert alarm went off. I jumped out of bed, changed the belt into fatigues, and raced for the bridge.

"What have we got Jane," I asked, as I dropped into my chair.

"Long range contact, barely showing on the nav map, but it looks like ships coming through the Bad Wolf jump point. They all show red. No identification yet."

"Interception course. Full speed."

"Confirmed."

I sat there waiting, as the next few hours went by.
