âChow time. C'mon, let's go get food. We work twelve on twelve off,â said Kent.
âI can't.â
âWhy?â
âNot allowed out of the Pit,â I said.
âOh...â
He faltered, not knowing what else to do. Then he lit up. âWait, you go chill in your new place. I'll bring dinner. I already talked to Rodgers.â
âYou can manage all of that?â
âYeah, no problem. Leave it to me,â he said with gusto. I shrugged and wandered back toward where my new room was supposed to be. I couldn't remember if I had been told the room number or not. I decided to find Rodgers before I got lost. He was in roughly the same place he had been when I first found him.
âHey, uh, Tim.â
âYeah, Dante?â
âI think we're done for the day.â
âYup.â
âSo, I guess I need to know where I'm holed up at.â
âRight. Here's the deal: I'm getting a lot of push-back on you. The LT is sympathetic, but we've got our hands tied. I set aside the garage for you like I said. It's been empty for something like three years, so I just put it in as 'equipment storage,' sorry. This way it goes unnoticed. It's garage two dash three one. As for food... well you told me earlier, but I've got the form up here. How much do you need per day?â
âWell, ten thousand calories will keep me from starving. If I can get away with it, upwards of twenty-five thousand calories a day to keep me content,â I said quietly.
âThere's no way I can get twenty-five for you. I've looked it over though, and I can requisition ten MREs each day for additional provisions for the unit. It's sort of a loophole. Like I said, there's a massive amount of push-back on you, which I don't understand. I watched you work; you handled a massive amount of material in a very short time and never complained. You even get along with Kent. You're good in my book, and I'm going to do what I can for you in return. Cool?â
âCool,â I said.
âGood. Twelve hours. See you soon. Your garage is right over there,â he said and pointed. I thanked him and set out in the direction he pointed. I found it a few minutes later, set into the wall surrounding the main Pit. The plaque was set next to the sliding door and completely covered in dust. I brushed it off to be sure, and it did read '2-31.' It looked like it hadn't been touched in decades. I gripped the handle near the bottom of the door with two fingers and my thumb, since I couldn't fit my hand into the small enclosure.
I gently lifted, cringing as the metal screeched on rusted hinges. It resisted as it thumped on stuck wheels in bent tracks. I pulled a little harder and heard a metallic 'pang' from inside the garage. The door suddenly started moving rustily. It opened to reveal a normal garage. The builders had gone to the trouble of putting concrete in the room, despite the fact it was stone just outside.
