Head-Scratcher

The Dibbarra

Mishak stood at the window, staring out at the indiscriminate patterns of color that enveloped a ship during path-flow. “You know the thing I really don’t understand?” he asked his mate. The feeling of gentle amusement from her was almost instantaneous.

“You’ve narrowed it down to just one thing?”

“I have absolutely no doubts that Eth was there, at Arraphka,” he said, leaving her gibe unchallenged. “What he did was useful to us when you’d expect them to throw in with Memnon, just to keep us even more off-balance. What’s his game?”

“And he didn’t take the opportunity to destroy a second ship,” she added. “Of course, that may just be a way of drawing out the time your crews have to live in fear of a meaningless death…”

“Not long after we hear that Bau was near Arbella at the same time as the Zeartekka Queen, we find the Humans at Arraphka, acting strangely.” He turned from the window to face her.

“They are renegades in the empire,” she reminded him. “If they have no place among us, the idea of an autonomous entity under Bau might be tempting…”

“For Bau as well,” he agreed. “Having their abilities at her disposal would increase their chances of secession by an order of magnitude.”

“That would change their behaviour.” She winced, placing a hand on her growing belly. “They can’t serve as a military arm for the separatists and still pursue personal vengeance.”

“And they would probably expect us to figure that out,” he said, moving over to the couch and sitting next to her. He stared down at his empty mug.

“You think?”

“They were sending a message,” he insisted. “I just can’t figure out what the message is. Are they offering peace? Are they warning us somehow?”

She sighed and leaned against his shoulder. “Messages are rarely that comprehensive. I doubt we’ll be able to pick this one apart and find answers to all our questions. Best to rely only on what it seems to tell us.”

“Hmmm…” He closed his eyes. “They may be in league with the separatists who, possibly, may have an interest in helping me keep peace in what remains of the empire?”

Tashmitum snored softly in response.
