“Where, exactly?” Ignon asked, studying the large map of the Vannan area on the wall. He had moved to another command center on the north side of the city after his estate had been destroyed. It was only a miracle of timing that he had not been caught in the northeast portion of the building when the flash bolts struck. Following the first strike, quick-thinking security guards ushered him into an underground panic room until the danger passed. Once the attack analysis was done, Ignon was left with more questions than answers.

The person operating the tank had yet to be found, without even tracks leading from the burned-out vehicle when investigators arrived on scene. Ignon knew for a fact that Cain was not in the tank; there was video of him entering the estate at about the same time as the attack. Who was working with him? It wasn’t the Crillian. She was in a holding cell within the building at the time. The fact that there was another entity assisting Cain gave Ignon concern. Who was helping the Human, and why?

An aide stepped up to the map and pointed. “The blockade was here. Then the vehicle was tracked along this street until the drone lost contact.”

“And how was it that the drone lost contact?” Ignon asked rhetorically. He’d gone over this already with other officers. First there was the brain-wave interference by the Crillian. Then flash weapons malfunctioned, while the survey drone mysteriously crashed moments later. What was happening that would bring about such a plethora of unfortunate events, all aiding in the alien’s escape. They were not accidents, Ignon reasoned, and because of that, he knew there were factors at play that were beyond his comprehension.

Already the fact that a being could enter the minds of another was something he would not have believed if he had not experienced it himself. But that was why the mutant was on Ellios—to use her abilities to further the war effort, either for or against the Bailie Front. It was a large and mysterious universe, and creatures such as SiriUs were more common than one would expect. Freaks of nature, resulting from one-in-a-billion births, and the galaxy was rife with beings who defied explanation. The fact that one was now on his planet made Ignon cringe. What was Daz thinking to bring such a creature to Ellios?

And yet Ignon had brought a Human to his world, although unintentionally. But something wasn’t right with Adam Cain.

Humans had been known to the galaxy for over forty standard years, having risen meteorically to leadership positions through their unnatural abilities. Yes, Ignon knew of the Humans. What he didn’t understand was how they did the things they did. And having done more research on the Human known as Adam Cain, the mystery only deepened.

As he waited for the aliens to be detected by the blockade, Ignon accessed the Galactic Library to do more research into Adam Cain. The story he read was beyond belief, beyond understanding.
