We had barely finished loading our luggage. I was preparing to open the car door for Jeri and she was smiling at me in anticipation of the gesture, when another car came zooming into the parking lot and rammed into the back end of my vehicle, barely missing me. Mine slewed sideways a few feet, causing the front to go the other way. It knocked me off my feet and staggered Jeri. I fell backward. My head hit the cement hard enough to momentarily knock me senseless. The whole thing happened so quickly that by the time I got a few brain cells working again after the blow to my head, Jeri was already in action.

Two men had jumped from their car right after banging into us, and obviously had managed to disconnect the air bags because I saw no sign of them having discharged later. One had just reached Jeri. She shrank away, as if afraid. Her assailant made a move to simply shove her aside in order to get to me. He was holding a pistol in one hand. Jeri quickly moved inside his guard, what he may have had of it. A hard slam of her elbow batted his pistol from his hand. She grabbed his other arm with one hand and brought her other up in a hard fist, snapping the elbow joint with an audible crack! He screamed at the excruciating pain as she shoved him into the advancing form of the other man. It was intended to knock both of them down, but somehow they managed to stay on their feet, even the one with his forearm dangling backward. He was out of it momentarily, though, blinded by tears of pain already streaming down his face.
I had my little S&W automatic out by that time, but I fired in such a hurry at her other opponent that I missed with my first two shots and by then she was in the line of fire. I never saw the third man.
Obviously, they didn't yet know that the aliens could change their form to human. It was me they were after, thinking I had information about where the alien spacecraft was hidden. I spotted him just as he aimed at Jeri's back, clearly intending to kill her.
The gun exploded, blowing his hand off. Some shrapnel fragments hit him in the face. One of them put out his right eye. He yelled and tried to clutch his face, then doubled over and vomited when he saw the mangled strips of flesh and tendons and bits of broken bone where his hand had been a second ago.
I didn't know why Jeri hadn't used her disintegrator on them, since they were so clearly bent on murder and mayhem, other than her aversion to killing. I had no such qualms. Still in a sitting position, I saw the one with the broken elbow scrabbling for what must be a weapon in an ankle holster.
