What I’ve learned about risky play

1. Let them climb; let them fall; let them maraud. I’m learning to turn off the BUBBLE WRAP! bat light (or rather ignore it. Occasionally). I’ll never stop worrying. But I’m trying to let my children grow and face challenges on their own, taking incremental steps so that they build up Viking-style ‘mastery’.

2. I’m attempting this in my own life, too. As a self-parenting experiment, I’m approaching daunting tasks with an uncharacteristically can-do attitude, safe in the knowledge that if I do something – anything – I’ll have made a start. I’ll be moving in the right direction. In the words of Anna from Frozen II: I’ll do ‘The Next Right Thing’.

3. If the world around us doesn’t allow for risky play, we’re going to have to seek it out. Or make like Jacob and create it from scratch. What scary thing should we all do this month?

4. With fresh air in my lungs, no children in hospital for at least a week, and something approaching muscle definition on my upper arms, I feel like a bona fide, North Face ’n’ Patagonia-clad outdoorsy type. A Viking, even! Then hubris deals me a massive blow. Because it turns out that there’s a third way Danes play. A mighty game on a vast web to threaten the very foundation of our Danish-style parenting efforts to date. *Cracks knuckles* Shoulders back, head up, let’s go …
