Achieving Synthesis in Five “Easy” Steps

Synthesis is difficult but straightforward. Here are five basic steps:

1. Present an idea. This can be done by invitation or by advancing your idea. (For the remainder of the steps, we’ll assume you advanced an idea.)

2. Invite and listen to counterarguments.

3. Employ those counterarguments to generate specific ways to disconfirm your belief (Chapter 5, Seek Disconfirmation). That is, make intentional use of your partner’s difference of opinion, focus on your position’s weaknesses, and explore ways to falsify your ideas.

4. Use the instances of (possible) disconfirmation to refine your original position. Modify your stance by incorporating counterarguments.

5. Repeat. Begin with your new, refined position and run through another iteration.4
