If you’re eating an Asian noodle dish, use chopsticks to bring the noodles to your mouth. It’s acceptable to slurp them up, but don’t be noisy.

“It’s the sense of what family is at the dinner table. It was the joy of knowing Mother was in the kitchen making our favorite dish. I wish more people would do this and recall the joy of life.”

PAUL PRUDHOMME

SIP SOUP

If nothing else, remember this: Do. Not. Slurp.

YOU WILL NEED

Crackers (optional)

Bowl of soup

Soup spoon

STEP 1 If you’re eating soup with crackers, drop them into the bowl one at a time.

STEP 2 Using your spoon, scoop the soup away from you, toward the center of the table. This prevents drips from falling onto your lap.

STEP 3 Gently bring the spoon to your lips. Sip from the side of the spoon, not the tip.

STEP 4 Do not slurp. We can’t emphasize this enough.

STEP 5 Repeat steps 2–4. To get the last bit of liquid from the near-empty bowl, tilt the bowl away from you and use the spoon to scoop up what’s left.

STEP 6 When you’re finished not slurping, place your spoon on the plate underneath the bowl or in the bowl if there isn’t a plate.
