White Burgundy (or Bourgogne in French) is basically another way to say chardonnay. So why didn’t we put it in the chardonnay section? Because it is essentially different; it’s a different wine, even though it’s made from the same grape. Chardonnay from Burgundy is crisper than chardonnay from California, but it can still be rich, with flavors of roasted nuts, green apples, and notes that are salty and savory. It also doesn’t have the intense oakiness of California chardonnay, since most producers in France use old oak barrels rather than brand-new ones. The flavor imparted by wood is much subtler when it’s been around for a while.

As with its red counterpart, white Burgundy tends to be expensive and highly regarded.

The best subregions of white Burgundy, which you’ll see on a label, are Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, and Chassagne-Montrachet.
