Learning to Relax

AS DESCRIBED IN CHAPTER 1, anger mentally and physically prepares you to confront danger. While your thinking creates much of your anger, physical arousal and agitation can fuel it and keep it going. Consequently, learning to calm yourself down physically is an important tool you can use to interrupt and reduce your rage.

You can choose a number of techniques to reduce your tension and arousal, including progressive muscle relaxation, guided imagery, autogenic training, biofeedback, and various forms of meditation. If used properly and steadily, these methods can lead to positive changes in your body, such as decreases in heart rate, blood pressure, and muscle tension. With practice, you can learn to relax your body as soon as you feel your physical tension and anger starting to build.

This chapter will describe specific relaxation skills that have been shown to help people who have anger problems. Much of the research backing up these skills has been conducted by psychologist Jerry Deffenbacher and his colleagues at Colorado State University. They have demonstrated that relaxation skills can lead to significant anger reduction.
