Antidote
Only when we embrace complexity, doubt, and uncertainty can the possibility exist of exceptions that defy the rules. Assessments then can be approached as ongoing, evolving processes that require sustained effort (e.g., a classroom teacher attempting to view students as if for the first time each day, even though it may be the end of the school year).
Words have power. How we name things influences how we perceive them, and care is best taken how we do so. When we label whole groups in highly derogatory ways, we act irresponsibly and in a callous fashion. We are essentializing, and by doing so, we strip the situation of depth as well as our own contributions and responsibility. Taking greater care with how we frame and present our thoughts is a first step towards dismantling any inclination towards essentialization.
Often, seem[s], and many (but not all) are key words that help resist the descent into essentialization—and the unconditional hate it sponsors.
