A professional organization’s outgoing executive director hired a close friend to take over. Whenever staff insinuated that their new boss got the job because of connections versus substantive knowledge, this new director began to question their abilities and loyalty. She prevented them from attending conferences and excluded them from listservs, even from the organization’s own social media. When confronted about this blocking, the director blamed technical glitches. Effectively, those who aspired to other duties were now seen as out of touch and told they lacked leadership potential. Members resigned, dues/income plummeted, yet it took years to understand the root of problem—this executive director. As is typical with sabotage, her replacement and staff had to rebuild the membership all because of her motive to control rather than lead the organization.

When the supervisor selects the Friday after Thanksgiving for a mandatory, noncrisis meeting, knowing it will pull countless people away from their long holiday weekend, we see a controller. Causing such inconvenience and doing something that deliberately annoys others indirectly discharges frustrations, placing this exasperation on others.
